In the thrilling 3-4 defeat against FC Brugge (to the match report>>>), Inter Milan not only lost the match but also their captain.

As the top club announced on Thursday, striker and two-goal scorer Lautaro Martinez suffered a thigh strain in the Champions League match.

An examination revealed that the 29-year-old Argentinian is likely to be out for weeks for the Italian champions.

Likely to Miss Derby

The club did not specify an exact recovery time, but according to Italian media, a return is only realistic after the international break in November.

This would mean Martinez would miss two Champions League matches and five league games for the "Nerazzurri". This includes the Derby della Madonnina against city rivals AC Milan.

The injury is a bitter blow for Inter. In the young season so far, the Argentinian international has been the most prolific attacker for the Northern Italians.

Across all competitions, he has six goals and one assist in seven competitive matches. Now Francesco Pio Esposito and Marcus Thuram are likely to form the attacking duo. Striker Bonny can also hope for more playing time.
