Serie A Bottom Club Appoints New Coach
A well-known 'firefighter' coach in Italy takes over at the former club of Austrian national team player Michael Svoboda.
As the fourth Serie A club this season, Venezia FC recently parted ways with head coach Giovanni Stroppa (More Info>>>).
The still winless bottom-placed team has now found a successor for the 58-year-old: As the club announced on Wednesday evening, Davide Nicola is set to save the club from relegation. He has signed a contract in the Lagoon City until 2028.
Has Already Saved Several Clubs
Nicola is no stranger to Serie A: For years, he has been considered an experienced 'firefighter' coach who has helped several struggling clubs avoid relegation. In the 2019/20 season, he kept Genoa CFC in the league, and he achieved the same with Torino FC in 2021/22.
With US Salernitana in 2022/23, he began a comeback that was long thought impossible, and also secured league survival for FC Empoli in 2023/24 and Cagliari Calcio in 2024/25.
Only in his last stint, with then-promoted side US Cremonese, did he fail to achieve the objective and was dismissed during the season.
