Messi Fails Again From the Spot, Sets World Cup First
The Argentine superstar misses a penalty against Egypt in the Round of 16, just as he did against Austria. This sets an unwanted record.
Lionel Messi misses another penalty at the FIFA World Cup 2026!
After the Argentine had already shot wide against Alexander Schlager in the opening minutes of the 2-0 win over Austria in the group stage, he now fails against goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir in the 21st minute against Egypt, with the score at 0-1.
While the 39-year-old is currently locked in a four-way battle for the top scorer spot in the World Cup goalscorer list with Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé (both with seven goals, like Messi) and Harry Kane (six goals), a negative record now also belongs to him: Messi is the first player in a World Cup finals to miss two penalties within regular playing time.
The current World Cup top scorer list>>>
While he currently holds the top spot in the all-time World Cup goalscorer list with 20 goals, his overall penalty record leaves room for improvement: Of Messi's eight attempts at World Cups, only four found the net.
