After Portugal's exit from the 2026 World Cup, national coach Roberto Martinez announced his resignation.

Just a few days later, Jorge Jesus was introduced as the new head coach.

He is expected to lead Portugal to success again in the future – however, it is unclear whether he can count on the services of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old has not yet announced whether he will continue his career with the national team.

Jesus has now announced his intention to seek a personal conversation with the Portuguese captain.

"This is a conversation that the two of us will have. What does he want to do for the future of his career?" explained the new head coach, who recently worked with Ronaldo at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Together, the Portuguese duo won the championship for the first time last season.

"As long as he plays, I will pick him"

"As long as he plays and is in a condition to be nominated, I will pick him – within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team," Jesus said about the Al-Nassr star.

The 71-year-old described Ronaldo as a "symbol of Portuguese football" and emphasized his significant influence within the team. Jesus dismissed speculation about potential problems in dealing with the superstar.

"He will never pose a problem for the national team. Neither for the national team nor for me," the new Portugal coach clarified.
