Spain Star Likely to Miss World Cup Match Against Austria
The European champions are facing several injured players after the match against Uruguay.
Spain is facing new personnel concerns at the Football World Cup in North America.
The Iberians' 1-0 victory over Uruguay (Match Report >>>) in Guadalajara was overshadowed by injuries to wingers Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino.
Williams suffered a groin injury, while Pino had to receive treatment for his left shoulder.
The Crystal Palace professional escaped with a sprain; an initially feared collarbone fracture was ruled out.
Moderate Injuries
The Spanish FA (RFEF) presented a corresponding medical bulletin on Saturday. "Nico Williams sustained a muscle injury in the right adductor area after a strong collision," stated the RFEF declaration.
Williams was one of Spain's key players on their way to the European Championship title in 2024. At the World Cup, the 23-year-old Athletic Bilbao winger has only made brief appearances so far.
"Both injuries are moderate, and their recovery will determine whether they will be fit to play," is the prognosis for the duo.
Further Injured Players
However, Spain is therefore threatened with a bottleneck on the wings, as Victor Munoz (muscle injury) has also not been able to play at the World Cup so far.
The team had already arrived at the tournament with uncertainties regarding Williams and Lamine Yamal, both of whom had thigh injuries to recover from.
Yamal has since recovered but has not yet played a full 90-minute match.
Nevertheless, Spain was able to finish Group H as winners. In the round of sixteen, they will face the runner-up of Group J, which is Austria.
