New Record! CR7 makes World Cup history
The Portugal star becomes the oldest goalscorer in a World Cup knockout phase against Croatia and celebrates several personal milestones.
Cristiano Ronaldo set several records in Portugal's round of sixteen victory against Croatia.
The 41-year-old confidently converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute to make it 1-1, scoring his first ever goal in a Football World Cup knockout phase.
Portugal subsequently turned the game around and advanced to the round of sixteen (to the match report >>>)
At 41 years and 148 days old, Ronaldo is now the oldest goalscorer in World Cup history in a knockout match. He takes over from his compatriot Pepe, who scored in the round of sixteen of the 2022 World Cup at 39 years and 283 days old in the 6-1 win against Switzerland.
Second award at this tournament
For his performance, Ronaldo was awarded the official "Man of the Match" award after the final whistle.
This is already his second award at this World Cup. The superstar had already been voted best player of the match after a brace in the 5-0 victory against Uzbekistan.
Messi remains out of reach
With his goal against Croatia, Ronaldo now has a total of eleven World Cup goals.
Throughout his career, the Portuguese now stands at 976 competitive goals. Ronaldo still needs eight goals to catch his long-time rival Lionel Messi, who has already scored six times in this World Cup and has a total of 19 World Cup goals, in the all-time World Cup top scorers list.
In the round of sixteen, Portugal now faces a blockbuster match against Spain on Monday (9:00 PM CEST).
