Draw against Spain, draw against Uruguay, and draw against Saudi Arabia!

In their World Cup debut, Cape Verde was drawn into one of the toughest groups. In the end, they surprisingly finished second, thrilled fans worldwide, and sensationally qualified for the knockout stage.

In the Round of 32, the task didn't get any easier. Waiting in Miami was none other than the reigning world champion with superstar Lionel Messi.

Pride prevails

However, contrary to what many had predicted, the match was no clear-cut affair. The island nation from West Africa put up a heroic fight, drove the "Albiceleste" to despair, and ultimately only succumbed to a 2-3 defeat in extra time.

"Above all, we must be proud of what we have achieved," said coach Bubista. "This World Cup is the deserved reward for our efforts. It has shown our character. It's a shame we lost, but it was simply incredible."

In front of 64,478 spectators, Argentina was the dominant team from the start, but Cape Verde's deep defensive block repeatedly thwarted the favorite's offensive efforts.

The Cape Verdeans countered a moment of brilliance from Lionel Messi after the half-time break with a beautifully worked goal and a powerful shot from a tight angle (59').

After that, Argentina's attacking stars repeatedly failed to beat Vozinha in goal for Cape Verde. The veteran has transformed into a global celebrity at this World Cup; the 40-year-old now has 19.2 million followers on Instagram, up from just 50,000 before the first match.

With a courageous defensive display, Cape Verde also nullified the triple world champion's final power play and had a bit of luck with a handball in the box.

And even when Lisandro Martinez scored what seemed like the decisive goal early in extra time from a corner, the underdog didn't give up.

Dream Goal in Extra Time

On one of Cape Verde's increasingly rare forays forward, Sidny Lopes Cabral perfectly utilized the space and left goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez no chance with a wonderful curling shot into the top right corner.

But class and experience ultimately told thanks to Romero after a Messi corner. Even after that, however, Argentina still had a scare, with goalkeeper Martinez preventing a brace from Lopes Cabral with a good save (116').

In the end, they were close to a sensation, but the high individual quality of the opponent ultimately made the difference. One thing is for sure: the Cape Verdeans will nevertheless embark on their journey home as heroes.

Praise for their performance also came from Lionel Messi, among others >>>
