Balogun Ban Scandal: Striker Speaks Out
The US striker comments on his red card and the actions of FIFA and Donald Trump.
US striker Folarin Balogun has commented for the first time on his lifted suspension.
He said it is normal to be suspended after a red card. "Of course, it's controversial when the decision is changed," the 25-year-old said after the 1-4 loss in the World Cup Round of 16 against Belgium (Match Report >>>), showing understanding for the uproar.
"We accepted the decision when I saw the red card, and we accepted the decision when we were told I could play," explained the AS Monaco professional.
Striker sought talks with Belgium coach Garcia
Balogun had received a red card in the USA's 2-0 win in the Round of 32 against Bosnia-Herzegovina, but FIFA subsequently suspended the striker's ban on probation. In the Round of 16 match against Belgium, US coach Mauricio Pochettino was then able to field the attacker.
Particularly harsh criticism arose from the fact that there had previously been a phone call between US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia explained after the match that he had spoken with Balogun. "He came to me, I liked that. He is not to blame," Garcia said at the press conference.
"I wanted to congratulate Belgium and Rudi Garcia and wish them much success for the rest of the tournament," Balogun reported about the conversation.
