Argentina are in the quarter-finals after one of the most dramatic matches of this World Cup.
In the Round of 16 against Egypt, the world champions were still 0-2 down until the 79th minute, but incredibly turned the game around to a 3-2 victory in ten minutes of added time (to the match report>>>).
It's no surprise that emotions ran high after the final whistle.
Tears from Messi
Above all, Lionel Messi could not hide his emotions. Tears welled up in the eyes of the captain, who was once again one of the most prominent players with a missed penalty and a goal, before his teammates lifted him into the air to great jubilation.
For a long time, it looked like a sensation was on the cards. Egypt pushed the favorites to the brink of elimination, but Argentina did not give up and fought their way back impressively in the final minutes.
The relief after the final whistle was immense.
Coach Cuts Interview Short
Head coach Lionel Scaloni also struggled with his emotions after the game. In a TV interview, the World Cup-winning coach initially found it hard to speak.
"What a group we have," Scaloni said with a trembling voice – he couldn't get anything else out. Shortly afterwards, he ended the interview to return to his team.
Little Time to Catch Breath
This evening will be long remembered by Argentina. Within a few minutes, what seemed like a certain World Cup exit turned into a place in the quarter-finals.
However, there isn't much time to process this Herculean effort. The next knockout match awaits already on Saturday night. The opponent will be determined between Colombia and Switzerland (from 22:00 in the LIVE TICKER>>>).
