The USA leave nothing to chance: The third host advances
Despite being a man down, the Americans can still add to their tally in the final phase.
The third host of the FIFA World Cup 2026 has also reached the Round of 16!
In the Round of 32, the USA knocked Bosnia and Herzegovina out of the tournament with a 2-0 victory.
The first half painted a clear picture: The USA tried to break down Bosnia's deep block.
In the 32nd minute, the ball found the net: Following a mistake by Bosnia in the build-up play, the Americans quickly switched gears and looked for Folarin Balogun in the center of the attack. The AS Monaco striker left the last defender trailing and slotted the ball into the net, but Balogun was marginally offside.
Second attempt finds the mark
Shortly before halftime, he did manage to score the opening goal. Malik Tillman tried to play a through ball to Balogun, but his pass was deflected by Radeljic. The ball still reached its intended recipient, who caught Vasilj off guard and slotted it in for a 1-0 lead (45.).
In the seventh minute of injury time, Balogun once again hit only the crossbar after a headed assist from Dest.
Red card brings back the tension
In the 65th minute, Brazilian referee Raphael Claus produced the red card. Striker Balogun unluckily caught Muharemovic on the ankle with the sole of his boot during a challenge and had to leave the field.
Even shorthanded, the hosts remained on the front foot: First, Pulisic tapped a blocked shot over the line when alone in front of goal, but was offside (79.).
Just moments later, Tillman took a good free-kick, and although Vasilj got a hand to it, he couldn't prevent the decisive goal (82.).
With the win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the USA advance to the Round of 16, where they will face Belgium. (CLICK HERE for the tournament bracket>>>).
