SKN Women beat Sporting, keep Champions League hopes alive
The Lower Austrians prevail against the Portuguese side in a penalty shootout and advance to the playoff.
Like Wiener Austria, the SKN St. Pölten women's team also advances to the final qualification round of the UEFA Women's Champions League.
The "Wolfesses" prevailed 4-1 in a penalty shootout against Sporting on Saturday. The score was 1-1 after 120 minutes.
Their playoff opponent will be determined during the draw in Nyon next Tuesday (August 11, 13:00). The playoff will be played over two legs (home and away) and is the final hurdle in the battle to reach the premier competition.
SKN Women prove reliable penalty takers
The second qualification round is played in the form of a mini-tournament. In the semi-final on Wednesday, the SKN women's team prevailed 4-3 against the Young Boys Bern women's team.
In Saturday's final against Sporting, the score was 0-0 after 90 minutes. This sent the match into extra time at the NV Arena, where Fanni Vago gave SKN a 1-0 lead (94th minute). The Portuguese side equalized 1-1 in the 111th minute through Telma Encarnacao.
The game went to a penalty shootout, where all SKN penalty takers converted their attempts. Two Sporting players missed, allowing the St. Pölten women to celebrate in the end.
The playoff round will be played on August 26 and September 2.
