Equalizer in the last second! Inter snatches Austria's first UWCL victory
In front of a record crowd in Vienna, the Bundesliga club dictated the pace for a long time. However, in stoppage time, Inter Milan scored the equalizer.
The women of Wiener Austria secure their first point in the UEFA Women's Champions League group stage! Nevertheless, they had long hoped for a victory.
After their 0-1 defeat in their Champions League debut against FC Chelsea, the Austrians had to settle for a 1-1 draw (1-0) against Inter Milan on matchday two in their first home game.
In Vienna, the "Violets" got off to a good start with the same starting XI as on the first matchday. Already in the seventh minute, they had their first good chance through Pfanner. The summer signing won the ball in the opponent's half and drove towards goal. However, the shot was too central, so Runarsdottir had no problems clearing it.
Uka scores the first CL goal
The Austria women remained dangerous and created the next opportunity through Pötzl. However, the shot from outside the box went over the visitors' goal (20'). Just a minute later, Uka struck clinically. The 27-year-old had plenty of space, went solo towards the goal, and scored Wiener Austria's first CL goal (21').
The goal also seemed to be a wake-up call for the Italians; even if they occasionally got closer to the Bundesliga club's goal, it rarely became dangerous.
Several good opportunities for the Viennese
However, after about half an hour, Inter's goalkeeper was tested again. Following a well-taken corner by Uka, Pfanner got to the ball from close range, but Runarsdottir was able to clear it. The goalkeeper, in collaboration with Cambiaghi, also showed her skill in the 37th minute after another corner by the Viennese, which became extremely dangerous.
After several chances for the home team and no truly dangerous actions from their opponents, the score was 1-0 at halftime. The Italian coach subsequently reacted with a quadruple substitution.
Inter creates danger for the first time
This seemed to have some effect. Wenninger had to intervene against Raphino (50'), but was able to defuse the situation. However, the next action in front of the record crowd belonged to the "Violets" again. Uka failed to beat Runarsdotter after a deflected free-kick (55').
After 72 minutes, Inter had the equalizer at their feet. Following a misplaced pass by Wenninger, Raphino was denied by a strong save from Pal, and Magull's follow-up shot also failed to find the net. Shortly after, the duel between Wenninger and Raphino occurred again, this time the Austrian emerged victorious.
Strong late offensive from the visitors
The visitors now had more possession. Raphino repeatedly broke through the defense. In the 78th minute, she set up Glionna. This time too, the Viennese goalkeeper prevented worse with a brilliant save. She also cleared a long-range shot from Vilhjalmsdottir (83').
It wasn't until the 90+4th minute that the Italians finally celebrated. The hosts failed to clear the ball. Ultimately, Hanshaw scored an own goal after a shot from Andres.
The Austria women's team will have their next chance for a victory on the international stage on October 29th. The home match against Juventus follows.
