Fermin brace: Barça celebrate narrow victory over Atletico
In a highly entertaining marquee matchup, the Catalans ultimately earn a deserved victory.
FC Barcelona secured a narrow 2-1 away victory against Atletico Madrid in the blockbuster match of round 12 of Spanish LaLiga. Both teams put on a highly entertaining display with chances at both ends.
Atletico started very actively. As early as the sixth minute, Julian Alvarez raced through one-on-one against Barça keeper Joan Garcia, but the Argentine—who was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer—lost his composure.
Shortly after, the Catalans threatened the opposing goal for the first time, but Pedri could only rattle the crossbar.
Fermin counters Simeone
In the 10th minute, the deadlock was broken. Alvarez crossed from the left to a completely unmarked Giuliano Simeone, who volleyed the ball home to spark wild celebrations for the opening goal.
Even after taking the lead, Atletico remained dangerous. Center-back David Hancko narrowly missed making it 2-0 following a corner kick.
Towards the end of the first half, the "Blaugrana" began to find their rhythm. In the 45th minute, Pedri dribbled his way to the penalty area before laying the ball off to Fermin Lopez, who fired home the equalizer for the Catalans.
Dream assist from Yamal
In the second half, Barça increasingly took control, though Atleti remained a threat. Alvarez missed another one-on-one opportunity against Garcia.
In the 66th minute, Lamine Yamal truly made his mark on the game. With a sublime pass, he found Fermin in the box, who tapped in to complete his brace.
After that, the pace of the match settled down somewhat. The Catalans focused on game management, denying Atletico any sustained spells of possession.
In the end, Barcelona comfortably held on to a deserved victory. The win keeps Hansi Flick's side at the top of the table. Sitting on 33 points, they lead Real (30) and Atletico (28).
