Messi held scoreless against Schnegg - becomes MLS top scorer
39-year-old Argentine is the first player to win the top scorer title for two consecutive seasons.
Football superstar Lionel Messi has become the first player to finish as top scorer in Major League Soccer (MLS) for two consecutive seasons.
The 39-year-old Argentine scored 26 goals in 31 games for Inter Miami during the regular season, four more than his closest contender. Last season, Messi recorded 29 goals.
He is the sixth player in MLS history to win the top scorer title twice — but the first to achieve the feat in back-to-back seasons. The exceptional playmaker also provided 17 assists, with his 43 total goal contributions also marking a league high.
Inter Miami finish second in the Eastern Conference table. In the playoffs starting on November 19, Messi's team will face Columbus Crew.
Schnagg finishes regular season with draw against Messi
Also represented in the playoffs is Tyrolean David Schnegg with Charlotte FC following a fifth-place finish in the East. In the final round of the regular season on Saturday, the 28-year-old left-back came on as a substitute in the 69th minute during the 3-3 (0-3) away draw against Inter Miami.
Messi played the full 90 minutes against Charlotte, but went scoreless in the final regular-season fixture.
Wolf signs off with a victory
For Styrian Hannes Wolf, however, the season with New York City has come to an end after finishing 11th in the Eastern Conference.
The season at least ended on a positive note with a 1-0 away victory against D.C. United. Wolf was substituted off in the 59th minute.
