Austrian Expat Player Reaches Süper Lig Summit with Promoted Side Amed

The league newcomer won Sunday's top clash against Besiktas.

Austrian expat Cem Üstündag and his club Amed SFK are currently sitting pretty at the top of the Turkish Süper Lig table.

League newcomers Amed won Sunday's top-of-the-table clash against Besiktas 3-2. The decisive man was once again Gift Orban, who is on loan from TSG Hoffenheim. The Nigerian striker fired Amed to a 1-0 lead (13th minute) and set up the 2-0 through Dia Saba (22nd minute). With seven goals, he currently shares first place in the top scorer list with Mohamed Salah (Trabzonspor).

Besiktas only managed consolation goals against the promoted side. Orkun Kökcü's goal for 2-3 came deep in stoppage time. Amed are ahead of Galatasaray thanks to a better goal difference. Both clubs have 13 points to their name.

Üstündag, who had moved from Kasimpasa to Amed in February, came on against Besiktas a quarter of an hour before the final whistle. It was the 25-year-old midfielder's fourth Süper Lig appearance of the current season; he spent several years at WSG Tirol.

Kurdish Centre

This year, Amed was promoted to the Turkish first division for the first time as runner-up. The club is based in the city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey. Amed is the Kurdish name for Diyarbakir.

The majority of the region's inhabitants are Kurds. Diyarbakir (Amed in Kurdish) is considered the cultural and political centre for Kurds in Turkey.
