In 2006, current Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was once an assistant coach under Giovanni Trapattoni at FC Red Bull Salzburg.

Later, his coaching career took off, and in 2014 he became a world champion as an assistant with Germany. He made his breakthrough in 2019 at FC Bayern, when he was promoted from assistant.

He then immediately won the treble with the club, and today he coaches FC Barcelona.

Would Koller have been sacked?

However, the German's professional head coaching career almost started elsewhere. As Basel president Patrick Degen reveals to "Blue", the Swiss club was interested in Flick.

"I would have brought him to FCB back then if he hadn't become Bayern coach. That's a secret I can reveal now," said Degen.

At that time, former ÖFB national team coach Marcel Koller was Basel coach (August 2018-August 2020). In the end, Koller kept his job, and Flick celebrated the treble with Bayern. In Sunday's friendly match, Barcelona defeated Basel 5:2.
