Ex-Salzburg Assistant Coach Secures Former Champions League Winner
The 35-year-old is heading to Al-Ittihad. He most recently played for Al-Ettifaq, also in the Saudi Pro League.
Georginio Wijnaldum moves to Al-Ittihad and remains in the Saudi Pro League.
The former Liverpool player arrives on a free transfer from league rival Al-Ettifaq. The Dutchman signs a contract until 2027 with the team that finished fifth last season.
There, he reunites with former national team colleague Steven Bergwijn. Wijnaldum won the Champions League with Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp in 2019.
The midfielder played his last game for the Netherlands national team in the 2-3 defeat against Austria at Euro 2024 in Germany.
His new coach also has a connection to Austria. Jens Wissing assisted Thomas Letsch at FC Red Bull Salzburg between June and October 2025. Via Gamba Osaka (Japan), he made the leap to Al-Ittihad in the summer.
