Havertz scores against former club: Arsenal completes London derby comeback
The Gunners turn the London derby around after an early deficit and celebrate their third win in their third Premier League game.
Arsenal wins the London derby against Chelsea with a score of 2-1 on the third matchday of the English Premier League.
Chelsea, however, gets off to a better start. After a free-kick from Reece James, a series of headers from Maxence Lacroix and Jorrel Hato eventually lead the ball to Morgan Rogers at the edge of the penalty area, who volleys it into the bottom corner (2').
However, Arsenal then increasingly takes control. In the 11th minute, the Gunners celebrate for the first time, but Riccardo Calafiori's goal is disallowed due to an offside infringement in the build-up.
Havertz scores against former club
Shortly after, the deserved equalizer arrives. Kai Havertz strongly asserts himself against several opponents in the 25th minute and completes his solo effort to make it 1-1 against his former club.
Arsenal remains clearly the better team afterwards and pushes for the lead. Despite their dominance, the hosts do not manage another goal before the break.
After the change of ends, it doesn't take long for Arsenal to finally turn the game around. The go-ahead goal is beautifully worked.
Christos Tzolis is played free on the left flank and lays the ball into the centre. Havertz cleverly lets the ball run past, giving Martin Ødegaard a clear shot. The Arsenal captain remains composed and slots the ball past Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez into the net (50').
Gunners confidently see out the win
Subsequently, Arsenal plays out the lead in the style of a reigning champion. Chelsea finds hardly any solutions against the Gunners' compact defense and rarely gets dangerously close to goal.
The Blues have their best chance for the equalizer shortly before the end. Estevao takes a shot in the 88th minute, but David Raya prevents the goal with a brilliant save.
Mikel Arteta's team thus remains flawless this season and holds the maximum of nine points. Only Manchester City is ahead of the Gunners due to a better goal difference.
For Chelsea and new coach Xabi Alonso, however, it is the first defeat of the season. The Blues remain on six points and are in fourth place.
