Werder debut for Schlager? Thioune hints at a change in goal
The ÖFB national team goalkeeper could make his first appearance for Werder Bremen in the DFB-Pokal against Borussia Dortmund. Coach Daniel Thioune gives him hope.
In the summer, Austria's national goalkeeper Alexander Schlager made the leap from Red Bull Salzburg to Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga.
Since then, the 30-year-old has had to settle for the role of number two behind first-choice keeper Karl Hein. Now, however, Schlager could be on the verge of his debut.
Daniel Thioune announced rotations to "Kicker" ahead of the DFB-Pokal match against Borussia Dortmund (at 8:45 PM in the LIVE ticker >>>).
"Whoever can stand in goal against Argentina and Spain, they..."
Thus, Niclas Füllkrug and Mitchell Weiser could initially take a seat on the bench.
A change in goal could also occur. "I haven't made a final decision yet," explains Thioune. First-choice keeper Karl Hein could be rested, and Schlager could make his debut.
In any case, the Werder coach has no concerns about throwing the ÖFB goalkeeper in at the deep end: "Whoever can stand in goal against Argentina and Spain, can also do that against Borussia Dortmund."
