FC Bayern Munich won the top match against SC Freiburg 3-1 on the seventh matchday of the German Bundesliga, thus remaining at the top of the table.

The Munich side had to play significantly depleted. Besides several injured key players, Joshua Kimmich was also still absent due to private reasons. Head coach Vincent Kompany was replaced by assistant coach Aaron Danks after a medical incident on Friday.

Austrian international Konrad Laimer played the full 90 minutes, but this time was deployed in central midfield. For Freiburg, Philipp Lienhart played until the 77th minute.

Upamecano opens scoring, Gnabry adds another

Bayern took control from the start and went ahead with their first shot on goal. Dayot Upamecano won the ball against Niklas Beste and initiated the counter-attack himself.

After a pass from Michael Olise, the centre-back ran towards Freiburg keeper Mio Backhaus and remained clinical. With a finish in the style of a world-class striker, he made it 1-0 (16').

Subsequently, Backhaus prevented a larger deficit with strong saves against Olise (23') and Nathaniel Brown (33'). Shortly before half-time, however, the Freiburg goalkeeper had to concede again.

Serge Gnabry played a one-two with Brown, broke through strongly, and nutmegged the onrushing Backhaus to make it 2-0 (42'). The Munich side went into the dressing room with a deserved lead.

Consolation goal comes too late

After the change of ends, Freiburg created their first really good opportunity. Just two minutes after his substitution, Igor Matanovic tested Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig with a long-range shot (59').

With a two-goal lead, the Munich side took some pace out of the game, but had several chances through Olise (74') and Saibari (80') to definitively decide the match.

In the closing stages, it suddenly became exciting again, as Bischof turned a low cross from Makengo into his own net (82').

The Breisgau side subsequently threw everything forward again, but Jonas Urbig was able to prevent a second Freiburg goal. Matthias Ginter had the equaliser on his head in stoppage time (90'+1).

A few moments later, Olise definitively sealed the win with the 3-1 goal (90'+5).

Bayern remain at the top

Ultimately, it was a deserved away win for the record champions against bravely battling Freiburg.

FC Bayern now stands at 17 points, thus defending their league leadership. Borussia Dortmund is behind on equal points. Freiburg remains in third place with 13 points.
