"The nose for goal still works": Baumgartner scores on comeback
After almost five months injured, the Austrian star immediately marks his return with a goal.
Christoph Baumgartner is back – and how!
After an almost five-month injury layoff, the Austrian international celebrated a dream comeback in the German Bundesliga. In RB Leipzig's 4-0 home victory against SV Elversberg, the 27-year-old scored a header just twelve minutes after being substituted on (to the match report >>>).
For Leipzig, it was an important success after two heavy defeats against Bayern Munich (1-6) and Real Madrid (1-4).
"The nose for goal still works"
Baumgartner was substituted on in the 72nd minute for Antonio Nusa and scored to make it 3-0 in the 84th minute. Following his personal highlight at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, where he had already contributed an assist in the 1-4 UEFA Champions League match, he also managed a perfect re-entry in front of the home crowd.
"That is, of course, something very special. After the personal highlight at the Bernabéu, I was extremely looking forward to the home game," explained the 58-cap Austrian international after the match.
The fact that he scored again immediately after such a long time particularly pleased the attacking player: "The most important thing is that we won the game. But when you score a goal right away after such a long time, that's really cool. The nose for goal still works."
Baumgartner sees room for improvement
Despite the clear success, Baumgartner doesn't want to overemphasize the victory. The Austrian star still sees room for improvement at Leipzig.
"Currently, there's still too much up and down, we don't need to talk about that," stated the 27-year-old. Looking ahead to the upcoming tasks, he demands more consistency: "We need to bring our performances to a more consistent level. We all need to tackle this together."
Next up, two important away games await Leipzig. In the DFB-Pokal, Leipzig will visit third-tier side Rot-Weiß Essen on Tuesday, before facing FC Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga.
It's quite possible that "Baumi" will then be in the "Bulls'" starting lineup for the first time again.
