SV Werder Bremen continues its successful run in the German Bundesliga. On the seventh matchday, the North Germans win 3-2 away at FSV Mainz 05, extending their unbeaten streak to six consecutive matches.

Man of the match is Niclas Füllkrug, who puts Bremen on track with a brace from the penalty spot. Marco Grüll shines with his sixth assist already in his seventh league match.

For Mainz, Austrian internationals Stefan Posch and Phillipp Mwene were on the pitch for the full duration. For Werder, captain Marco Friedl and Grüll also played the entire match.

Füllkrug Clinical from the Spot

The match started as badly as imaginable for Mainz. Posch was too late against the quick Arthur and brought the Bremen player down. Referee Florian Badstübner immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Füllkrug stepped up and sent Alexander Schwolow the wrong way (7').

Shortly after, there was another penalty for the visitors. This time, Grüll beat Danny da Costa with a feint. The Mainz defender left his leg in and brought the Austrian down. Again Füllkrug stepped up, again the 33-year-old scored. Schwolow guessed the corner but couldn't save the precisely taken penalty (25').

These were Füllkrug's seventh and eighth goals of the season.

Grüll with Sixth Assist

The hosts were not deterred by the early two-goal deficit and fought back before halftime. Sheraldo Becker delivered a cross into the box, where Anthony Caci was perfectly positioned to head home for 1-2 (33').

However, after the break, Bremen scored again. Grüll laid the ball off for Ludovit Reis at the edge of the box. The summer signing shot directly, with the shot being crucially deflected by Mwene. Schwolow had no chance (61').

Mainz Hits Back Immediately

Mainz's response was not long in coming. This time, Caci was the provider: His cross found Jae-sung Lee in the middle, who headed the ball into the net for 2-3 (63').

Thus, the match was completely open again. Mainz pushed for the equalizer, but Bremen held on to their narrow lead and took home three important points.

Werder moves past Mainz with twelve points and is now in sixth place. FSV drops back to seventh place with ten points.

Augsburg and Union Share the Points

In the parallel match, FC Augsburg and Union Berlin drew 1-1. Austrian forward Michael Gregoritsch played the full match for FCA. For the Berliners, Leopold Querfeld came on as early as the 25th minute, while Christopher Trimmel remained on the bench for 90 minutes.

SC Paderborn surprisingly defeated HSV 1-0, with Rayan Philippe scoring the golden goal in the 88th minute.
