DFB-Pokal: 35 Police Officers Injured at Derby – Multiple Arrests
Following the clashes at the DFB-Pokal derby between Mannheim and Kaiserslautern, further details about the police operation are now emerging.
The clashes at the Southwest Derby between Waldhof Mannheim and 1. FC Kaiserslautern (0-1 AET, to the match report >>>) resulted in significantly more injuries than initially known.
According to police, at least 35 officers were injured. This included 33 federal police officers and two police officers from Baden-Württemberg. Emergency services personnel were reportedly attacked with pyrotechnics and rockets, among other things.
Multiple Arrests
Several arrests were also made in connection with the incidents. The police are investigating, among other things, for assault, criminal damage, disturbing the peace, and assault on emergency services personnel. Furthermore, violations of the Explosives Act are being considered.
In total, according to the police, 85 people required medical attention, eight of whom were taken to hospital due to their injuries.
Around 1,400 emergency services personnel were deployed for the derby, which was classified as a high-risk match. Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Manuel Hagel described the rioters as "criminals" and expressed his support for the injured police officers.
Meanwhile, the DFB announced a comprehensive investigation into the incidents.
