Clashes overshadow Southwest Derby in the German Cup
In the derby between Mannheim and Kaiserslautern, police had to intervene with horses and pepper spray.
Severe clashes overshadowed the first-round match in the German Cup between Waldhof Mannheim and 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
After regular time ended goalless, a scrum first broke out on the pitch. Subsequently, home fans threw objects at players and staff of FCK, while the away fans, in turn, fired flares at the main stand.
Police forced to intervene
When the Mannheim supporters then attempted to storm the pitch, the police intervened with horses and pepper spray. Referee Schröder subsequently sent both teams to the changing rooms – the match only resumed with extra time after half an hour.
The Lautern side then secured the win with a wonder goal by Ibrahim Kanate in the final minute. Austrian legionnaire Thierry Tazemeta was in the starting eleven for the visitors and was substituted in the 87th minute.
