Austrian International Dropped Ahead of Derby
The 33-year-old did not feature in the squad for the traditional clash with 1. FC Köln. Coach Alexander Blessin explains why.
Kevin Stöger currently plays no major role in Alexander Blessin's plans at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The new coach dropped the 33-year-old Austrian before last Sunday's derby against 1. FC Köln.
Blessin told the "Rheinische Post": "These are squaddecisions where you weigh things up. We have young, hungry players. Mathieu Nguefack simply impressed me. That's why I decided in favour of him and not against Kevin Stöger."
Even though six regular starters were missing, there was no place in the squad for the midfielder. Alongside Nguefack, Florian Neuhaus, Zento Uno, and Philipp Sander apparently have better chances.
Contract Expires
In the summer of 2024, Stöger moved to the "Foals" from VfL Bochum on a free transfer.
Since then, the five-time Austrian international has only started 31 of his total 69 competitive appearances. In the current Bundesliga season, Stöger has featured in three matches so far.
If the veteran completes at least half of the Bundesliga season matches (17), his contract, which expires next summer, will automatically be extended by another year until 2028.
Stöger is reportedly among the top earners in the Borussians' squad.
