Official: Schmid and Grillitsch move to Italy

What had already been brewing is now official – Romano Schmid and Florian Grillitsch are joining Italian top-flight club Frosinone Calcio.

The club announced this on Wednesday. Schmid signs a contract with the Serie A promoted side until 2030, while Grillitsch commits for one season until 2027. However, the club has an option to extend the contract for another year.

While Grillitsch moves to Frosinone on a free transfer after terminating his contract in Portugal, Schmid brings a hefty transfer fee to his long-standing employer Werder Bremen.

According to media reports, 8.5 million euros will be paid for the Austrian international, who said goodbye to his club just a few hours ago (More info>>>).

"Face of the team"

"With Romano, a player who has become one of the faces of our team in recent years is leaving us. He has matured into a good Bundesliga and national team player in Bremen and has strongly identified with the club, the city, and the fans," says Clemens Fritz, Managing Director of Football at SV Werder Bremen, about the 26-year-old's departure.

"However, Frosinone Calcio submitted an offer that meets both our economic interests and Romano's personal wishes. We wish him all the best, both professionally and privately, for his new step in Italy," he adds.

Moved to Bremen in 2019

Romano Schmid moved to the Weser in January 2019, but shortly thereafter began an 18-month loan spell at Wolfsberger AC.

In December 2020, Schmid debuted for SV Werder in the Bundesliga. Since then, the 26-year-old has made 192 competitive appearances for Werder, scoring 18 goals.
