BVB Farewell? Sabitzer Makes Future Decision
His agent provides insight into the transfer summer and reveals what's next for the Austrian international.
Marcel Sabitzer has been under contract with Borussia Dortmund since summer 2023. With BVB, the 102-cap Austrian international even reached the Champions League final in the 2023/24 season.
However, departure rumors have been circulating around the 32-year-old midfielder for quite some time. His agent, Roger Wittmann, has now put a stop to a possible Deadline Day transfer. "There were ten different inquiries, but Marcel Sabitzer will stay," the managing director of the ROGON agency announced to "Sky Sport News".
Chukwuemeka Still Not Named to Squad
Thus, the Austrian will enter his final contract year with the Black and Yellows. Whether he will move beyond a substitute role remains to be seen. In the past season, as well as in the first two games of the current season, he mostly came off the bench.
With the signing of Joey Veerman, the competition in central midfield has further intensified. This also has direct implications for Carney Chukwuemeka's playing time opportunities, the second Austrian international in the ranks of the Borussians.
The Vienna-born player recently struggled with muscular problems, which is why he was not in the squad for either the Supercup or the Bundesliga opener.
Matthäus Sees Sabitzer and Chukwuemeka as Solutions for BVB
However, opportunities could arise for Sabitzer and Chukwuemeka due to the injury of Giannis Konstantelias.
According to former Ballon d'Or winner Lothar Matthäus, there wouldn't even be a need for a replacement for this position. "With Sabitzer, they have someone who has often played that role in Austria and at BVB – and Chukwuemeka. In my opinion, both of them can play this position at any time, for example," Matthäus explained in his column for Sky.
