Bayern coach Vincent Kompany's collapse has triggered a debate about the strain on coaches.

Coaching legend Felix Magath told "Bild" that he, too, stood on the sidelines while ill.

Magath felt the pressure firsthand

The now 73-year-old is not surprised by the Belgian's collapse: "The rhythm has become faster. The frequency higher. And with that, the pressure and the strain. This applies not only to the players; it logically applies to the coaches as well."

Magath also faced immense pressure during his coaching career – pressure he primarily put on himself, according to his own statements: "I had this pressure, but I also put pressure on myself. I always wanted to win, always wanted to be better," recalls the German.

Magath was close to burnout

During his time at Schalke, Magath even showed up to training while ill: "I also stood on the pitch with a 40-degree fever – but fortunately without worse consequences."

The 73-year-old did not experience a situation like Kompany's. However, Magath was also close to burnout at Schalke. From 2009 to 2011, the German not only served as coach of the "Royal Blues" but also as manager and board member for sports.
