Istanbul Derby escalates after final whistle
Galatasaray wins the derby against Fenerbahce 2-1. However, the situation on the pitch escalates after the final whistle.
Galatasaray Istanbul wins the derby against Fenerbahce 2-1 on Sunday evening. However, the match is overshadowed by the scenes on the pitch immediately after the final whistle.
Hardly had the referee's whistle sounded when fierce altercations broke out between the players.
Kerem Aktürkoglu (Fenerbahce) and Roland Sallai (Galatasaray) were the first to clash. Referee Atilla Karaoglan only showed both players a yellow card.
Wrestling match instead of handshake
Meanwhile, Abdülkerim Bardakci (Galatasaray) and Archie Brown (Fenerbahce) engaged in an altercation resembling a wrestling match. Brown even dragged Bardakci to the ground by his neck. Both players were subsequently shown a red card.
When substitutes from the bench also got involved, melees increasingly formed, which could only be calmed down by the intervention of stewards and police.
Osimhen with a brace
Victor Osimhen played a major role in the derby victory, scoring both goals for Galatasaray (29th and 44th).
Irfan Kahveci scored Fenerbahce's consolation goal (62nd). With the victory, Galatasaray maintains its lead in the Süper Lig table.
