Decision on Niko Kovac's future at BVB reportedly made
The Croatian's contract expires at the end of the season. Both parties have now reportedly reached an agreement on his future.
Niko Kovac is likely to remain head coach of Borussia Dortmund beyond the current season.
As reported by "Bild" on Wednesday, BVB is said to have agreed with the 54-year-old on an extension of his current contract until 2029. According to the tabloid, the figures are already "on the table," with only the signatures still missing.
Kovac reportedly waited for the decision regarding the future of BVB sporting director Lars Ricken before finally committing to Borussia Dortmund.
Now, the final details between the Croatian and the Black and Yellows could be clarified soon, and the extension subsequently announced officially.
Highest points per game average since Tuchel
Kovac has been in office at BVB since February 2025 and led the Black and Yellows to a runner-up finish last season.
In the current season, Dortmund leads the table in the Deutsche Bundesliga ahead of FC Bayern and SC Freiburg, having won all four of their season matches so far.
Overall, Kovac has achieved a points per game average of 2.03 across 79 matches at BVB – the highest of any head coach since Thomas Tuchel (2.12).
