Ex-Bayern player criticizes Kane extension: "It's a risk"
The Munich club extended the contract of the newly crowned Ballon d'Or winner on Thursday. A former Bayern player questions the decision.
England international striker Harry Kane will remain with FC Bayern beyond the summer.
As the Munich club announced on Thursday, the 33-year-old has extended his contract at Säbener Straße until 2029 (All details>>>).
FC Bayern dug deep into their pockets for the deal, with Kane becoming the top earner in Munich following his extension. Given his age – the Briton turns 34 in July – former Bayern player Dietmar Hamann sees this as a potential risk.
"They had no choice"
"I think it is a significant risk. Whether he will still be scoring goals over the next three years? We will see," the 53-year-old said on Sky.
"Bayern almost had no choice but to extend. I don't think there was much interest from England – they would have taken him for 20 or 30 million," said Hamann, who has repeatedly raised eyebrows with controversial statements in the past.
18 goal contributions this season
Kane, who was recently awarded the Ballon d'Or, has proven he still knows where the back of the net is in the current season as well.
Across all competitions, the 33-year-old has scored ten goals for FC Bayern so far, along with eight assists. Last season, Kane netted 61 goals in 51 competitive matches for FC Bayern.
