Two long-range goals hand HSV victory
A red card sends Gladbach stumbling, while a home-grown talent sets HSV on the path to victory.
In matchday nine of the German Bundesliga, HSV earned a 3-1 home victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead as early as the eleventh minute through Miro Muheim, set up by Albert Sambi Lokonga. The natural center-back, currently operating in central midfield, hammered the ball home from around 30 meters out.
Just before the halftime break, the visitors got back into the game. Joseph Scally capitalized on a misunderstanding in the Hamburg defense. For the wing-back, it was already his fifth goal contribution of the season.
Home-grown talent capitalizes on numerical advantage
However, Ko Itakura weakened Gladbach in the 49th minute with his second tactical foul. The Japanese international brought down Grönbaek and received a second yellow card.
After that, Hamburg took control of the game. 19-year-old home-grown talent Shafiq Nandja put HSV back in front at 2-1 with his first Bundesliga goal (60').
Ten minutes later, Grönbaek intercepted a clearance attempt and unleashed a strike from 25 meters. The shot dipped spectacularly into the top corner to make it 3-1.
With the win, HSV climb to eighth place in the table for now, sitting on twelve points. Borussia Mönchengladbach suffered their seventh defeat of the season and remain rooted to the bottom of the standings with four points.
Austrian international Kevin Stöger was an unused substitute for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
