SC Freiburg reclaims the league lead against FC Schalke 04.

The Breisgau side narrowly won 2-1 against Miron Muslic's team on the fifth Bundesliga matchday.

Freiburg started actively, full of confidence from recent weeks. They took the lead in the 10th minute from a corner kick. Loris Karius initially managed to save a header from Matthias Ginter, but Maximilian Eggestein decisively poked in the rebound to score the opener.

Debutante Scores

Even after that, the Breisgau side remained on the offensive, but they couldn't capitalize on further chances, allowing Schalke to equalize with their first real opportunity.

Also from a corner, the ball rebounded to the edge of the box, where Swiss Bundesliga debutant Adrian Gantenbein simply took a shot. The ball was slightly deflected and found the back of the net (30').

Freiburg Scores While Short-Handed

In the second half, Schalke grew increasingly into the game. Austrian international Maximilian Wöber had a big header opportunity in the 60th minute, but the ball was cleared off the line just in time.

Shortly thereafter, Yuito Suzuki received a yellow-red card for an unnecessary foul (64').

After that, there was little action from either team – until the 85th minute. Following a cross from Vincenzo Grifo, Keisuke Goto rose highest to score the winning goal for Freiburg.

Philipp Lienhart's team, with Lienhart playing the full match, are now the new league leaders with 13 points. Schalke, with Maxi Wöber (until the 79th minute) and Junior Adamu (until the 69th minute) in the starting eleven, are in 13th place with five points. Dejan Ljubicic was absent for the "Miners" due to injury.
