End of an era!

As 1. FC Heidenheim officially announced on Tuesday evening, Frank Schmidt will step down from his position as head coach. The 52-year-old has reportedly decided not to extend his contract.

Schmidt has become a cult figure in Heidenheim. The German took over in September 2007 and has coached the club continuously to this day.

His greatest success to date was winning the second German Bundesliga in 2023 and promotion to the top flight. In total, he has been on the sidelines for 756 competitive matches.

"Simply want to take a break"

Schmidt on his decision: "I therefore informed Holger Sanwald (Heidenheim's CEO, editor's note) on Monday that I will not extend my contract again, because after almost 20 years as head coach at FCH I simply want to take a break in the summer."

"How long this break will be and what will come into my life from July 1st, I am not thinking about that at the moment – on the contrary: I forbid myself from doing so until then. Instead, I will give everything for our maximum success this season until the last game," said Schmidt.
