After death of second-tier player: Homicide investigation underway
The CD Tenerife player died following a collision with the opposing goalkeeper. An investigation is now underway.
Following the death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel (30), the homicide unit of the Spanish National Police is investigating.
The Spanish second-tier professional had been treated on the field for minutes after a collision with opposing goalkeeper Jesus Owono during stoppage time in the match against FC Andorra, and was subsequently taken to the hospital.
As his club CD Tenerife announced, de Miguel had to be resuscitated on the way to the hospital, and his condition worsened again overnight. By Tuesday morning, the sad truth was confirmed.
Possible Negligent Homicide
Several media outlets reported, citing investigative circles, that the case is under judicial supervision. The investigation is reportedly for possible negligent homicide.
In stoppage time of the match, Owono challenged de Miguel excessively hard in midfield, hitting him with his knee in the chest area. The goalkeeper received a red card, and the match was abandoned with the score at 2-2.
The Spanish federation RFEF cancelled the cup matches on Tuesday evening, and UEFA announced minutes of silence at all European club matches this week.
