World Champion Duo Rescues PSG from Opening Defeat
For a long time, everything pointed to a defeat for Paris Saint-Germain. But then Luis Enrique brought two world champions onto the field.
Late point gain for Paris Saint-Germain!
The reigning Champions League winners had to settle for a 2-2 draw away at FC Stade Rennes in the first round of the French Ligue 1.
The hosts upped the tempo in the first half and shocked the favourites: Szymaski scored early (9'), and Lepaul added another (39'). PSG, who fielded their strongest squad with the exception of the suspended Nuno Mendes, struggled to create chances.
Enrique Brings on the World Champions
At half-time, Luis Enrique reacted, bringing on two world champions, Ruiz and Torres, among others. A co-production from the duo eventually led to the first goal for PSG. World Cup winning goalscorer Torres scored in his first game for the Parisians (71').
And the two weren't finished yet: Ten minutes later, Torres scored again from Ruiz's assist to level the score at 2-2 (82').
Defeat Against Lens, Victory Against Villa
So, PSG's title defence mission in the league begins with a draw. In the French Supercup against cup winners RC Lens a week ago, they suffered a 0-1 defeat.
However, they did manage to beat Aston Villa 2-1 in the European Supercup in Salzburg, celebrating their first title of the season.
