Last-Minute Equalizer: Liverpool Snatch Draw in Newcastle

Matthias Jaissle narrowly missed out on a dream debut with his new club, Newcastle United.

The team of the former Salzburg coach led 2-1 against Liverpool FC for a long time on the first matchday of the Premier League, but had to concede the equalizer in stoppage time.

The match began perfectly for the "Magpies" - the visitors were caught on the counter, William Osula served Anthony Elanga with a through ball, who slotted it in for an early lead (5.).

The "Reds" subsequently had 71 percent possession but did little with it. Neo-coach Andoni Iraola's team lacked a clear game plan; Florian Wirtz had their best chance, but Lukas Hornicek fished his shot out of the corner (18.).

Szoboszlai Rescues a Point for Liverpool

After the break, Liverpool started stronger and promptly equalized: Cody Gakpo received the ball about 20 meters from goal, didn't hesitate, and found the far corner with a powerful shot to level the score (55.).

However, the hosts' response was swift: Newcastle again caught the visitors cold on the counter, and Joe Willock completed the attack after brilliant setup play from Yoane Wissa (57.).

Even in the second half, the "Reds" had more possession but couldn't capitalize on it for a long time. In stoppage time, however, the visitors finally had cause to celebrate.

The otherwise strong Lewis Hall brought Victor Muñoz down in the box in the final minute, and Dominik Szoboszlai slammed the resulting penalty unstoppably into the top left corner, salvaging a point for his team (90.+9).
