Club Statement: Chelsea's Allegations Against Former Coach Maresca
Until New Year's, Enzo Maresca was on the sidelines for Chelsea. His former employer is now speaking out about the reasons for the separation.
Following Enzo Maresca's confirmed appointment at Manchester City, his former employer Chelsea is now speaking out with a detailed statement.
The statement begins with the words: "Given the recent developments, we consider it important to explain to our fans what has happened and why our former head coach left the club on January 1, 2026."
Maresca Wanted to Become Guardiola's Successor
Furthermore, Chelsea accuses Maresca of having focused on potentially succeeding Pep Guardiola at Manchester City from an early stage.
"It became clear to us that it was his strong desire to succeed Guardiola, and that he was determined to pursue this opportunity, even though he had a long-term contract which he was not permitted to terminate. In December 2025, our head coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position."
Finally, the London club further emphasized its stance and made no secret of its disappointment about the events at the time: "Naturally, we felt let down, as we believed his thoughts and heart were already with another club and another opportunity, even though he had only joined Chelsea the year before."
