Liverpool agrees deal for Tobias Lawal's rival

Liverpool FC is reportedly already planning for its goalkeeping future. As several media outlets consistently report, the "Reds" have agreed on a move for Lucca Brughmans for the summer of 2027.

Liverpool is said to pay a transfer package of around 35 million Euros for the 18-year-old Belgian. Brughmans is currently under contract with KRC Genk and is considered one of the biggest goalkeeping talents in his country.

A significant role could await him at Liverpool from 2027. The contract of first-choice keeper Alisson Becker expires at the end of the season. The 33-year-old Brazilian could thus make way for Brughmans.

Competition with Mamardashvili?

However, Brughmans would not be entirely without competition. Liverpool already signed Giorgi Mamardashvili for 30 million Euros from Valencia CF in 2024. The Georgian international goalkeeper was actually brought in as Alisson's long-term successor.

With Brughmans, another top-class goalkeeper will likely join. And this could also have consequences for an Austrian international.

Lawal without an appearance since March

Brughmans made his breakthrough at Genk precisely at the expense of Tobias Lawal. The 26-year-old ex-LASK keeper was still the clear number one before his injury.

Lawal was injured in March 2026 during the international break with the ÖFB. In his almost two-month absence, Brughmans seized his chance and pushed himself so much to the forefront that Lawal has not made another appearance since his return.

What will Lawal do?

The developments surrounding Brughmans could now also influence Lawal's future. Genk already informed the goalkeeper in June that he is allowed to leave the club. However, there have been no concrete transfer rumors surrounding the Austrian since then.

Lawal's contract at Genk runs until 2029. Now the question is whether the Austrian international keeper will find a new club towards the end of the transfer window – or whether he will initially settle for the role as number two.

Should Brughmans actually move to Liverpool in 2027, Lawal could at least regain the prospect of a regular starting spot at Genk in the long term.
