Ahead of LASK Clash: Liverpool Clearly Loses Top Game Against City
Manchester City celebrate their sixth win in their sixth Premier League match. The "Reds", meanwhile, suffer their first defeat of the season.
Manchester City remain the standard-bearers in the Premier League!
The "Skyblues" win the top game of the sixth round at FC Liverpool with a 3-0 scoreline, thus maintaining their perfect record.
The hosts at Anfield Road started with commitment. Liverpool had more possession and largely pushed City into their own half. However, clear goal-scoring opportunities remained scarce in an intense first half that was rather lacking in on-field events.
The visitors were loudly booed with every touch of the ball. The background for this is the financial scandal surrounding Manchester City (full details >>>).
Sending Off as Turning Point
After the break, the game gathered momentum. Koumas was initially thwarted by City keeper Donnarumma (47th minute), before the latter also parried a long-range shot from Ryan Gravenberch. Alexis Mac Allister curled the rebound just wide of the goal (48th).
At the other end, Erling Haaland missed a big chance (60th). Shortly after, Liverpool weakened themselves: Gravenberch was shown the yellow-red card after a foul on Jeremy Doku (62nd).
Quick-fire Double with Numerical Advantage
City ruthlessly exploited their numerical advantage. After a blocked Doku shot, Haaland got to the ball in the penalty area and scored into the bottom left corner to open the scoring (65th). Just three minutes later, Doku added another. The Belgian cut in from the left and buried the ball with a wonder goal into the top right corner (68th).
Cherki eventually added the final goal, being set up by Gvardiol with a backheel, leaving Frimpong sliding into thin air, and then slotting it past Alisson when free (78th).
Liverpool could not respond and suffered their first defeat of the current Premier League season. Manchester City, however, remain unbeaten after six matchdays.
With 18 points, City continue to lead the table three points clear of Arsenal. Liverpool are in ninth place, already nine points behind.
Next Wednesday, the "Reds" will play away at LASK on the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League (6:45 PM in the LIVE ticker).
