Strong Wiegele Performance Despite Clear Pilsen Defeat
The ÖFB keeper distinguishes himself despite his team's clear opening loss in the Europa League.
Viktoria Pilsen, featuring ÖFB keeper Florian Wiegele, suffered a clear 0-3 defeat against Union Saint-Gilloise on the first matchday of the Europa League group stage.
Despite the clear loss, Wiegele was the best player on the pitch for the Czechs, neutralizing several top chances from the Belgians and saving his team from an even heavier defeat. With ten saves and a statistical value of 2.29 prevented goals, the 25-year-old delivered a strong performance.
Nevertheless, there was nothing to gain against USG. In the 17th minute, Relebohile Mofokeng put the visitors in front, and Mateo Biondic extended the lead before halftime (43'). After the break, Ondrej Kricfalusi scored to make it 3-0 (59').
A second ÖFB player, Raul Florucz, was absent for Saint-Gilloise due to suspension.
