According to reports, the 2014 World Cup winner will join the DFB with Jürgen Klopp and replace Andreas Rettig.
Per Mertesacker will become the new Managing Director of Sport at the DFB. This has been reported consistently by "Sky Sport", "RTL" and "ntv".
The 2014 World Cup winner is expected to sign his contract this Friday. According to reports, it will be valid until after the 2030 World Cup.
Also on Friday (11:00 AM), Jürgen Klopp is set to be presented as the new DFB national team coach during a press conference. However, Mertesacker will not be present at the press conference in Frankfurt am Main.
Rettig's Successor
The 41-year-old will take up his position on January 1, 2027, replacing Andreas Rettig.
Rettig's departure from the DFB at year-end had become known during the World Cup. He had already made the decision not to extend his expiring contract before the World Cup.
Mertesacker had ended his playing career at Arsenal FC and had worked as head of the youth academy there in recent years.
