Paris Saint-Germain won their Champions League match against Villarreal CF 6-0 on Tuesday evening. In doing so, the French side achieved something historic.

Joao Neves opened the scoring for the goal-fest in Spain, making it 1-0 in the ninth minute. Following an error by former Salzburg goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, Desire Doue extended the lead to 2-0 as early as the twelfth minute.

Four Goals After 16 Minutes

Just a few seconds later, the French extended their lead to 3-0 through Senny Mayulu (13'), following another error by the Spanish in their build-up play.

The 4-0 for PSG also didn't take long: After 16 minutes and two seconds, Fabian Ruiz scored, writing history in the process. Never before had a team in the Champions League managed to be four goals ahead at this point in a match.

"L‘Équipe" described the performance: "Every PSG attack sent Villarreal's players into a panic. The pressure in the danger zone was unbearable for Villarreal. Paris broke the record for the fastest 4-0 lead and was already in exhibition mode after 17 minutes."

In the end, PSG sealed the 6-0 victory with further goals from Fabian Ruiz (50') and David Boly (78'). The Spanish players were booed off the pitch by their fans.

The previous record was held by Real Madrid, who were already 4-0 up against Dinamo Zagreb after just under 20 minutes in 2011.
