Thanks to Guirassy! Dortmund overcomes Sabah
Things don't go smoothly against the Azerbaijani champions, but in the end, they secure three points.
Birthday present delivered!
Borussia Dortmund secures a 2-1 victory against FK Sabah on Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League, thanks to a brace from Serhou Guirassy.
On his birthday, Carney Chukwuemeka is in the starting eleven, playing until the 71st minute. His Austrian national team colleague Marcel Sabitzer then replaces him.
Early Lead
The visitors from Germany take the initiative from the start and quickly become dangerous. However, the hosts also show effort. In the 14th minute, the ball finds the net for the first time.
Through a one-two pass between Fabio Silva and Chukwuemeka, the Borussians work their way into the penalty area. The ball eventually finds its way to Felix Nmecha at the edge of the box. Keeper Stas Pokatilov can parry his shot but not hold it, so the ball lands with Serhou Guirassy, who taps it in.
The Azerbaijanis are by no means without chances. In the 29th minute, the supposed equalizer even falls. Joy-Lance Mickels' goal, who taps it in alone in front of Gregor Kobel, does not count due to an offside position.
Not Undeserved Equalizer
While Dortmund mostly control the game, they repeatedly take their foot off the gas. In these phases, the Azerbaijani champions play well.
Shortly before halftime, Sabah then rewards themselves. A free-kick for the hosts, Tymoteusz Puchacz delivers the ball into the penalty area, where Aden McCarthy gets his head to it between center-backs Nico Schlotterbeck and Waldemar Anton (39'). It is his first goal on the international stage.
After the break, Dortmund reappears improved. Just a few minutes later, the Germans take the lead again. Again, it's Guirassy, who scores the Black and Yellows' fourth goal of the season with a volley (53'). He has scored all four.
Sabah Fails to Equalize
The hosts try hard, but the Borussians defend very well. Thus, they manage to hold on to their lead.
After three rounds, Dortmund have two wins and one loss to their name.
In the parallel match, Fenerbhace and Slavia Prague draw 2-2.
