Will Captain Seidl Play His Last Rapid Game Against Sturm?

SK Rapid could offload captain Matthias Seidl before the transfer deadline.

Following their exit from the European competition, the Green-Whites need to close a budget gap, making a sale of the 25-year-old a realistic option.

According to the "Kurier", while the club didn't budget for the UEFA Conference League group stage, they did account for a "significant transfer surplus". So far, no player has been sold.

"Unexpected Million-Euro Offer"

Already at the end of July, the newspaper reported that Rapid had received an "unexpected million-euro offer" for a key player. It is now revealed that this was for Seidl.

Sporting director Markus Katzer emphasized at the time: "Actually, we don't want to make this transfer." However, after missing out on the group stage, the circumstances could now be different.

Lack of Appreciation: Hoff Thorup Backs Seidl

Coach Johannes Hoff Thorup demonstratively stood behind his captain on Friday and criticized the lack of appreciation for the Austrian international.

When asked if Seidl received enough recognition at Rapid, the Dane responded with a clear "No". He emphasized that the midfielder always puts the club before his own ego and leads by example with his attitude.

Seidl Still Playing on Second Division Terms

Seidl's contract situation adds further sensitivity to the matter.

According to the "Kurier", the Austrian international is still playing under the terms he signed when he moved from Blau-Weiß Linz in summer 2023, which corresponded to those of a second-division player at the time.

A contract extension already failed in 2024 after the parties could not agree on the release clause. Now, Seidl could play his last game for Rapid on Sunday (5:00 PM in the LIVE ticker >>>) against SK Sturm.

An "international offer" for the midfielder is reportedly on the table.
