"A must-win": Salzburg remains realistic after Cup triumph

"A very good start, nothing more and nothing less," says new Salzburg coach Danny Röhl about his team's 7-1 opening victory in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup against SV Oberwart.

Already in the first half, the "Bulls" - who had three external new signings in the starting eleven with Veratschnig, Barry, and Boma - dictated the pace. Nevertheless, according to their coach, the team had a brief lull.

Baidoo (8th), Vertessen (11th), and Diakite (33rd) provided a three-goal lead, but Oberwart didn't give up. Before the break (35th), Hutter reduced the deficit to 1-3.

"As a coach, you're never satisfied with conceding a goal," Röhl explains.

Röhl satisfied with successful second half

Nevertheless, he is satisfied with how his team performed in the second half despite the virtually decided match. "It was important that we continued to play very seriously and with intensity in the second half, and we also scored four more goals."

This time, Redzic (54th/89th), Veratschnig (76th), and Kitano (80th) entered the scoresheet.

Victory important for the team

Nevertheless, he still sees the victory against the regional league team as a "must-win". However, he is aware of the dangers of the Cup: "I believe it was a mandatory win, we simply had to do it. But you know, in the Cup there are always some slips, but we didn't let ourselves be exposed," emphasizes the German.

The triumph in his first competitive match was not only important for him personally, but he especially wished it for the team. It was important so that the players could see that the preparation had borne fruit.

For Salzburg, the ADMIRAL Bundesliga begins on August 1st with a home match against Hartberg. According to the coach, the opponents will now be stronger. "I believe we have to approach the next matches with the same passion and attitude," he concludes.
