After four matches and reaching the round of sixteen, Austria's journey at this World Cup comes to an end. However, despite the elimination, the players are also filled with pride over their first World Cup participation.

Captain David Alaba has now posted a lengthy statement on Instagram, speaking also "of a great honor to represent these lads as captain at this World Cup and to lead our team onto the pitch. Every day of our journey was special and left a lasting impression on me."

High praise for the fans

The 34-year-old defender was on the pitch for all four matches and has now accumulated 117 international caps for Austria.

"And it was a joy for me to see how great the enthusiasm is back home in Austria. We felt it here on the pitch every minute. I cannot express in words how much that meant to us. It's simply wonderful to see our country united."

Nevertheless, the "disappointment among all of us is immense".
