Austria Salzburg: Bitter Déjà Vu for Captain against Vienna
Just like in the league match a few weeks ago, an Austria captain gets injured against Vienna.
SV Austria Salzburg will probably be relieved not to have to play against Vienna again until mid-March.
Not only because there was a clear 0:4 defeat at home in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup against the Viennese. But because for the second time this season, Salzburg's respective captain was injured in the duel with Vienna.
Rieder in the League, Meisl in the Cup
In the cup match, Luca Meisl was the one affected. The defender had to leave the field injured after just 18 minutes. As Austria announced after the MRI, the stand-in for the actual captain Florian Rieder suffered a meniscus injury.
Barely a month ago, it was Rieder himself who had to be substituted injured during the 4:1 league victory against Vienna. After scoring the interim 1:1, he fell awkwardly on his right arm and broke his hand.
Major Injury Concerns
Overall, Salzburg's injury list is extensive. In addition to Rieder and Meisl, Marco Rottensteiner, Lukas Schweighofer, Yannic Fötschl, and Mohammad Mahmoud are also out.
"I'm running out of hands counting the absences. But I'm not focusing on that either," says sporting director Roland Kirchler to the "SN".
Next Saturday (from 3:30 PM), Austria Salzburg will face Sturm Graz II at home.
