In the Penalty Shootout! WAC Nervously Scrapes Into ÖFB Cup Round of 16
Over 120 minutes in Parndorf, the Lavanttalers were lacking in many aspects. In the end, nerves decided in favour of the favourite.
No single Bundesliga club suffered the embarrassment of being eliminated in the second round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup.
Wolfsberger AC came closest to failure, with the Lavanttalers narrowly defeating SC/ESV Parndorf 7-6 after a penalty shootout.
Youngster Causes Problems for WAC
WAC struggled from the start in Burgenland, with 19-year-old Gambian Ebrima Fofana in the Parndorf attack consistently causing major problems for the "Wolves".
Giacomo Vrioni had the best chance in the first half shortly before the break, but the Albanian missed the target (37').
WAC Captain Potentially Seriously Injured
Coach Thomas Silberberger reacted at halftime with three fresh players, but the Wolfsbergers continued to struggle against the tenacious Parndorf side.
To make matters worse, WAC captain Nicolas Wimmer then suffered a potentially serious knee injury and had to be carried off.
Fitz Provides Assist on Starting XI Debut
Then, out of nowhere, the favourite took the lead: Dominik Fitz, making his starting XI debut, delivered a perfect free-kick into the box, where Markus Pink headed it in – 1-0 for the visitors (79').
But Parndorf did not give up – quite the opposite. First, Fofana's bicycle kick hit the side netting (85').
Just when everyone expected WAC to progress, Dominik Schmidt headed the underdog into extra time (90'+1).
Another Red Card for WAC
In extra time, things started terribly for the Lavanttalers: Otar Mamageishvili came in late on a challenge and saw a yellow-red card – it was the third consecutive game in which a Wolfsberger player was sent off.
Despite being a man down, WAC took the lead again, with substitute Luca Hassler perfectly set up by Pink and remaining cool in front of goal – 1-2 (96').
WAC Shows More Staying Power in Penalties
But Parndorf still refused to concede defeat, with Fabian Ziniel heading in to level the score again (107'). Subsequently, a completely exhausted WAC had to save themselves in the penalty shootout.
After the first two shooters on both sides failed, the shootout proceeded confidently back and forth for a long time. In the end, Schmidt failed to beat new WAC goalie Lior Gliklich.
All twelve Bundesliga clubs are now in the Round of 16, which is a first.
