Will the 2027 Nordic Ski World Championships be relocated?

The decision to reintegrate athletes from Russia and Belarus into FIS competitions as neutral athletes recently met with strong resistance in Scandinavia.

The Swedish Ski Association even went so far as to examine, together with the national government, whether they could refuse entry visas to said athletes from Russia and Belarus. In Norway, too, there was clear opposition to the participation of Russian athletes.

These circumstances are particularly sensitive with regard to the 2027 Nordic Ski World Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Falun, Sweden, from February 24 to March 7.

Val di Fiemme would like to take over the World Championships

Should the conflict not be resolved, the Italian region of Val di Fiemme has now put itself forward as a possible replacement venue for the 2027 World Championships.

"The idea is to bring the World Championships back here soon; the will is there, and the structures are in place," says Pietro De Godenz, President of the Organizing Committee, to "Fondo Italia".

"If the municipal administrations tell us to go ahead, then we will go ahead and apply," De Godenz further explains. The Nordic competitions of the Winter Olympics are only scheduled to take place in Val di Fiemme in 2026. A Nordic Ski World Championship last took place in the Fiemme Valley in 2013.

Reaction from Falun

There has now also been a reaction from Falun. Kajsa Sjösvärd, CEO of the 2027 Nordic Ski World Championships, told "Falu-Kuriren":

"We have not received any signals from the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) regarding this. We are preparing according to our event contract, the so-called Hosting Contract, which we have with the FIS. It clearly regulates how we are to behave towards all nations and teams."

It is stated that equal conditions will be created for all participants at the World Championships.
